Amazon announced a new service where it will personalize Kindle covered and skins, for the same price as blank covers. Customers can choose from regular blank covers and Amazon’s own proprietary Origami folding cover. Users can choose their own images, uploaded to Amazon or they can choose from Amazon’s own design and a library of images, logos, designs and patterns.
“With this new service, we’re making it possible for customers to dream up virtually any design and seamlessly turn it into a Kindle cover—at no additional cost,” says Peter Larsen, vice president, Amazon Kindle. “We’ve also created designs exclusive to Amazon that work perfectly with our new Origami covers to give customers even more options.”
An interesting aspect of this offering is Amazon is going beyond the customary photo-upload and royalty-free artwork and have added popular comic, movie and television show graphics from “Peanuts,” “National Geographic,” “Breaking Bad,” “Star Trek,” and more. This licensed content is the next phase of photo personalization, where consumers will add their favorite personalities or scenes to their everyday products.
This trend is getting even more popular now that self-branding of artists and even corporate brands like M&M is growing. Evidence of that can be seen every year at the Licensing Expo where more than 5000 brands are competing to get attention from the masse customers. The attendance of the show grew by 10 percent last year; very few tradeshow can claim the same.
Offering a photobook theme where a kid pictures is blending among his super heroes is a sure win but you need make sure your solution can manage license content correctly. Copyright is a serious business and fortunately our designing tools have all the features to make this possible allowing protection of licensed assets and preventing the user to change them.
Like the recent Moto X smartphone, which allows some customization of the software and the device through a website, there is increasing expectations consumers will want to have input on the designs of their products. Customers are demanding more? Of course, so give them some content to start with and they will add their personal touch.
